Newfoundland and Labrador may be one of Canada’s least populated provinces, but it captivates travellers with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and incredible wildlife. Together, these experiences make it one of Canada’s most unforgettable destinations. To showcase just how vibrant the culture is, here are seven things to do in Newfoundland that every Canadian should experience at least once.

See the First Sunrise at Cape Spear

Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America, is the perfect place to see the continent’s first sunrise. Spending early mornings near the cliff feels calm and refreshing, with the stunning views and sound of seabirds and ocean waves creating a peaceful start to the day. It’s an experience that’s absolutely a must when visiting Newfoundland.

    Whale Watching Tour

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Newfoundland is the perfect place for a whale watching tour. You can join the whale watching tour by boat or sea kayak, both guided by experienced operators and tour guides. One of the most popular options is O’Brien’s Boat Tours, an award-winning company that offers wildlife tours where you can spot humpback whales, puffins, and seabirds. If you prefer to stay on land, you can still catch glimpses of the wildlife on seaside trails, cliffs, or beaches.

Walk on the Earth’s Mantle in Gros Morne National Park

The Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park are half a billion years old. They reveal a rare landscape composed of exposed mantle rock known as peridotite, which is normally only found below the Earth’s crust. The area features orange-brown mountains that give the landscape a unique appearance. Visitors have the option to explore the Tablelands on their own or book a guided hike.

    Explore Iceberg Alley

Newfoundland is one of the best places in the world to see icebergs. Most of the icebergs seen near Newfoundland travel down from Greenland or the Canadian Arctic, through a route known as Iceberg Alley, which drifts closely along the island’s east and north coasts. Exploring Iceberg Alley and seeing the massive icebergs up close on a boat tour is truly a unique and unforgettable experience, especially since it’s one of the few places in North America where you can view them.

Sleep in a Lighthouse Near the Northern Tip

Staying overnight in a lighthouse, such as the 1922 Quirpon Lighthouse Inn, on the shores of Iceberg Alley, offers a rare and memorable experience you won’t find anywhere else. Located right near the water, visitors can often spot orcas and humpback whales up close. You’ll also have stunning views of the ocean and the northern lights from the lighthouse’s viewing station.

    Visit Jellybean Row

Jellybean Row, located in downtown St. Johns, features iconic rows of houses painted in bright, cheerful colours. It’s a must-see attraction as it reflects the city’s history and culture. Jellybean Row is also the perfect spot for taking pictures. Being in the heart of downtown St. Johns also makes it easy to explore the nearby shops and cafes while enjoying the local vibe.

    Taste Local Seafood

Newfoundland sits in the North Atlantic Ocean, one of the world’s most fertile fishing areas. Because of this, the province is known for its abundant and incredibly fresh seafood. Cod, snow crab, shrimp, scallops, and lobster are the most popular options in the province’s cuisine. Popular restaurants with high ratings include St. John’s Fish Exchange Kitchen and Wet Bar, as well as Saltwater Restaurant, both of which serve delicious fresh local seafood.

    A Trip to Remember

Completing the ultimate Newfoundland bucket list is sure to guarantee a fun and excitement-filled trip. With activities across the province offering something for everyone, it’s an unforgettable experience that every Canadian should do at least once.
