    Green Energy Rebates Are Powering Higher Home Resale Prices

    With power outages on the rise and utility bills climbing, more Canadians are looking for reliable, cost-saving ways to power their homes. From city condos to rural cottages, green energy upgrades like battery storage and solar panels are gaining popularity across the country.

    We spoke with Travis Riggin, Vice President of Sales at Solwel—a Canadian solar and battery storage system distributor—to get a clearer picture of today’s green energy rebates and home upgrades. He shared what’s driving demand, how battery systems work in real life, and how homeowners can take advantage of current incentives.

    Let’s break down what’s available now and how these incentives can help you save money, stay powered during outages, and boost your property’s value.

    Why Battery Storage Is Gaining Traction in Canadian Homes 

    According to Riggin, a major reason more Canadians are considering battery storage is simple: the grid isn’t keeping up. 

    “The grid is aging and overloaded—especially with more EVs charging. Extreme weather can take it down fast,” he told us. “Battery storage helps reduce demand and protects your home when the grid fails.”

    Home battery systems, often used with solar panels, store energy when rates are low, like overnight, and power your home during outages or peak hours. They’re especially useful during brownouts, which are becoming more common in cities.

    “We’re already seeing brownouts, like in 2023,” Riggin explained. “Battery and solar reduce the strain on the grid and give homeowners peace of mind.”

    Another benefit? These systems are quiet, efficient, and unlike gas generators, they don’t require fuel or regular maintenance. That makes them a popular choice for families who want a clean, everyday solution to rising energy costs and reliability concerns. 

    Yet, awareness remains low. Riggin notes that “only 10-15% of the population is familiar with battery storage systems right now.” But that’s starting to change. “Every major power outage creates a surge in interest.” 

    He also pointed out that a hardwired battery system can be an investment for people living in townhomes. 

    “It adds value and makes your home more attractive to future buyers,” Riggin said.

    What Green Energy Rebates Are Available Right Now? 

    Fortunately, there’s growing support from both federal and provincial governments for Canadians to invest in energy-efficient home upgrades. Many of these offer solar panel rebate options and battery storage incentives to help lower upfront costs.

    National Programs 

    The Canada Greener Homes Initiative offers up to $5,000 in grants for eligible retrofits like solar panels and battery systems. It also provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000. This is one of the easiest ways to access battery storage incentives and solar panel rebate options in Canada.

    Provincial Incentives 

    • Ontario: Rebates are available through a partnership between Enbridge and the Canada Greener Homes program. 
    • British Columbia: BC Hydro offers targeted rebates for solar panels and battery storage. 

    While these two provinces are currently leading the charge, support elsewhere is catching up. So even if you’re outside Ontario or B.C., it’s still worth exploring local programs and monitoring for new incentives as demand grows. 

    Why Battery Storage Beats Generators 

    Unlike noisy, gas-powered generators, battery systems are clean, silent, and integrated directly into your home’s electrical system. They can charge from the grid during off-peak hours, then automatically power your home when rates are high or during a blackout. 

    “Battery systems are silent, low-maintenance, and much better for the environment than a generator, which can be loud and polluting,” Riggin explained.

    Beyond convenience, that quiet reliability can lower your monthly hydro bill and give you peace of mind year-round.

    Battery systems can also be programmed to work around time-of-use billing. “During peak demand hours (typically 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.), energy rates are high,” explains Riggin. “With a battery, you can program it to take your home off the grid for 4–5 hours a day and charge it overnight when power is cheaper.”

    Battery systems are also getting easier to access. PointGuard products, known for being quiet and low-maintenance, are exclusively available through Solwel. These systems work with solar and can power your home daily or during outages.

    Who Should Consider These Systems? 

    Energy upgrades aren’t one-size-fits-all, but battery and solar technologies can be adapted for nearly every type of home. 

    • Urban/Suburban Homeowners: Take advantage of time-of-use billing and reduce dependence on the grid. 
    • Rural/Remote Residents (e.g., Muskoka, Orillia): Frequent outages make battery backups a worthwhile investment. 
    • Townhome Owners: Installing a hardwired battery system boosts your resale value and adds appeal for energy-conscious buyers. 
    • Renters: Portable battery banks offer emergency power and can move with you when you relocate. 

    Installation: Fast, Simple, and Increasingly Popular
