There’s nothing more fitting than starting a fall road trip in the Halloween Capital of the world. Begin the day at Jaho Coffee Roaster & Wine Bar with seasonal treats like a hot apple cider latte, pumpkin patch mocha, or cake cups, while taking a quiet stroll at Salem Willows Park. Next, visit nearby farms for pumpkin or apple picking, and enjoy seasonal activities. That evening, explore the Salem Witch Museum, then end the day with the Haunted Happenings festival, featuring haunted houses, live music, and ghost tours.

From Salem, you’ll drive South to Newport, a coastal town famous for its historic mansions and picturesque shorelines. Stroll along Cliff Walk for stunning ocean views framed by Gilded Age estates. Visit iconic Newport mansions, like The Breakers and Marble House, to admire their grand, historic interiors. Explore the Newport Harbour waterfront for cafés and local shops.  Conclude the day with an evening drive along Ocean Drive to discover beaches, rocky coastlines, and landmarks such as the Castle Hill Lighthouse, perfect for fall photos. Then make your way southwest into the rolling hills of Litchfield Hills, Connecticut.

Venture into Litchfield Hills, where winding country roads and golden leaves set the perfect backdrop for a fall adventure. Hike or bike the trails at White Memorial Conservation Center to enjoy some of the area’s most beautiful fall scenery, then wander through town to explore shops, cafés, and historic architecture. Afterward, visit Sunset Meadow Vineyards for fun fall festivities, including chocolate and wine tastings, Gilmore Girls trivia, the Fall Market, and live music. As your time here comes to an end, head north for the charming streets of Woodstock.

Start the morning at Dreamscape Coffee, a cozy, moody café perfect for fueling up with ultimate fall energy. Afterward, wander through the village streets and soak up its classic New England charm. In the heart of Woodstock, stop at the Middle Covered Bridge, one of Vermont’s most photographed spots, for postcard-worthy views of the fall foliage. For a taste of local history, head to the Billings Farm and Museum for homemade jam and wagon rides. As you continue, prepare to head east to Portsmouth, where you’ll be enchanted by historic downtown views.

In the heart of the city, explore elegant architecture, browse antiques, and visit artisan shops. Make your way to Prescott Park for scenic walks, picnics, and photo ops. Then embark on a boat tour departing from Portsmouth Harbor, where vibrant fall leaves and views of the lighthouse complement the industrial waterfront and natural landscapes. From here, you’ll continue your journey heading northeast.

Your New England road trip concludes in Portland with a relaxing day in the Old Port District, where you can wander cobblestone streets lined with cafes, boutiques, and art galleries. Visit farmers’ markets to pick up fresh autumn produce or enjoy seasonal baked goods and cider. Portland is also known for its fresh seafood, making it the perfect place to try a renowned lobster roll at Luke’s Lobster Portland Pier, voted the city’s best. Then head to Portland Head Light, a beautiful lighthouse on the coast, and enjoy the coastline adorned with vibrant fall colours.

The Magic of Fall in New England

From spooky streets and coastal charm to little farms and historic towns, this New England road trip offers the perfect blend of seasonal treats, colorful fall scenery, and unforgettable experiences.
