6 Essential Items Every Moving-Out Starter Kit Needs

Moving out for the first time can be both exciting and nerve-wracking — it marks the start of a brand new chapter in your life. But with a little preparation and planning, moving into your new space can actually be a lot of fun. After all, you get to decorate, organize, and set things up exactly how you like. To help you stay organized and avoid forgetting the most important items, we compiled a list of six moving-out essentials for your starter kit, whether you’re settling into your first home or just a dorm room.

    Kitchen Supplies

Starting with the basics, let’s look at kitchen supplies. Whether you’re cooking a full meal or just reheating leftovers, having a few essentials like pots, pans, plates, bowls, and utensils will make your life so much easier. Cooking at home not only saves money but also makes your new place feel homier and gives it a cozy, lived-in smell instead of the fresh paint or furniture smell. A good pan or even a baking sheet can go a long way when you’re first moving in. Start with essential small appliances, such as a microwave, kettle, and toaster. You can always add more later as you figure out which ones you use most often.

    First Aid & Medicine

Many people don’t think about packing medicine and first aid supplies, but sooner or later, you’ll likely catch a cold or feel unwell at some point, and when that time comes, you won’t want to leave home to pick up medicine or supplies. Packing a box with essentials like Band-Aids, alcohol wipes, Tylenol, cough drops, and pain relievers will save you a lot of stress, and you’ll be extremely grateful that you did it early on.

    Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies are a must-have in every household, and you’ll use them for just about everything. Especially when moving into a new home, doing a deep clean is key to making sure everything feels fresh and sanitized. Essentials like a mop, vacuum, paper towels, and reusable cloths will come in handy as they are used regularly. Don’t forget to pack cleaning products such as disinfectant wipes, detergent, hand soap, dish soap, and all-purpose cleaners. By having these in your start kit, you’re sure to keep your home fresh and clean.

    Toiletries

Amid all the packing, planning, and excitement of moving, the chaos makes it easy to overlook small but essential items. Having a basic toiletries kit ready from the day you move in ensures you can get ready comfortably without worrying about being unprepared. Be sure to pack a bag with items like a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, face cleanser, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, and lotion. This way, you can fully wash up after a long and exhausting day and start the next one feeling refreshed.

    Bedding and Pillows

Getting a good night’s rest in a new place can feel strange when you’re still adjusting to a new environment. Bringing your own mattress, bed sheets, duvet covers, and pillows can make the space feel cozy and comfortable, helping you settle in and get used to your new surroundings more quickly. Even something as small as your favourite throw blanket can make a big difference.

    Miscellaneous Items

This category includes small, random items that you might not use every day, but when you need them, you’ll be frustrated you don’t have them on hand. This can include batteries, hangers, flashlights, extension cords, chargers, and lamps. For example, a flashlight during a power outage or a spare battery when your TV remote control runs out of power. Having these items ready from the start can save you the hassle of running out to get them when you need them most.

Bonus: Things that Make it Feel Like Home

Moving into a new place can feel intimidating when everything is unfamiliar. While these are not essentials, they can help you feel relaxed and at home. Personal items such as photos of family and friends, books, stuffed animals, wall art, rugs, candles, and plants can make the space feel less bare and more like your own.

    Settle In With Ease

Being prepared and organized makes the whole moving-out experience much calmer and more orderly. Planning and following a list can help you relieve some of that stress. By being prepared, you’ll feel more confident, independent, and ready to enjoy your new home the day you move in. Good luck and happy moving!
