Wallpaper has made a serious comeback in recent years. From bold murals to delicate prints, the options are endless and the results can be breathtaking. But before you start envisioning a papered powder room, it’s important to be prepared.

Here’s everything you need to know as a beginner, so your wallpapering project is as seamless as it is stylish.

It’s not like the ‘old days’

If you’ve ever heard your parents (or grandparents) tell stories about their struggles with stubborn wallpaper paste, you’ll be relieved to know that things have changed for the better! Modern wallpapers often come in peel-and-stick options, making them perfect for renters or first-timers. There are also user-friendly adhesives available that offer improved durability, ensuring the wallpaper stays put on your walls while still being easily removable when needed.

    Fashion vs. function

Not only has the wallpaper-papering process evolved, but the aesthetic has too. Today’s wallpaper designs are available to match all interior styles, from bold prints and textures, to subtle and sophisticated.

When it comes to choosing wallpaper for your home, it’s important to understand that not all wallpapers are created equal. Different areas of your house have unique needs, and wallpaper types vary in material, design, and functionality to suit those needs. Here’s a guide to help you make informed choices:

    Wallpaper varieties by material

    • Vinyl wallpaper: Durable and moisture-resistant, this type is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas. It’s easy to clean and can withstand humidity.
    • Non-woven wallpaper: A breathable option, great for living rooms or bedrooms. It’s easy to install and remove without damaging walls.
    • Fabric wallpaper: Luxurious and textured, often used in formal spaces like dining rooms or bedrooms to create a sophisticated ambiance.
    • Textured wallpaper: Adds depth and can mimic materials like brick or wood. Perfect for covering minor wall imperfections or adding character to accent walls.
    • Peel-and-stick wallpaper: Temporary and renter-friendly, great for accent walls or kids’ rooms where tastes may frequently change.

    Choosing wallpaper for different areas

    • Kitchens and bathrooms: Choose vinyl or washable wallpaper that resists moisture and is easy to clean.
    • Hallways and staircases: Durable, high-quality wallpaper that can handle frequent contact is a must while adding style to transitional spaces.
    • Kids’ rooms: Look for playful patterns in the peel-and-stick variety since it’s easy to update as they grow.

    Current wallpaper trends

Wallpaper trends are all about bringing personality into your home. The distinctions between trends seem to be as varied as personalities are, naturally. A few of the top wallpapering trends for 2025 include nature-inspired designs,  eclectic prints, geometric monochrome patterns, panoramic murals (accent walls are out!) and dark and moody walls.

One of the  most unique trends in the wallpaper world this year is papering the ceiling (the ‘5th wall’) and using wallpaper as a piece of artwork hung in large statement frames, as opposed to a full wall covering.

    The process

Once you’ve committed to wallpapering your home, there are a few non-negotiables to be aware of to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible:

    1. Prep your walls: Ensure surfaces are smooth, clean, and dry. Patch up any holes or imperfections for the best results.
    2. Measure accurately: Wallpapering requires precision. Measure your space at least twice and always purchase an extra roll for mistakes or future repairs.
    3. Test the pattern: Wallpaper samples are readily available at more retailers and can help you visualize how a design will look in your space. Note – Patterns can appear different in natural versus artificial light.
    4. Start small: If you’re new to wallpapering, try a small room or framed design before tackling larger spaces.

    When to hire a professional

While DIY can be satisfying, hiring a professional ensures a flawless finish, especially for more intricate designs or challenging spaces like staircases and ceilings. Professionals also have the tools and expertise to handle wallpaper paste, complex cuts, and pattern matching, leaving you with a polished and stress-free result.

    A final note

Although wallpapering can be seen as a more advanced project to take on without experience, it has become much more user-friendly over the years, thanks to peel-and-stick options and easily removable adhesives.

Being mindful of the tips in this wallpapering guide, you can have the confidence and know-how you need to take on this creative journey, designing a space that’s uniquely yours.
