Realtors are experienced in dealing with two of society’s biggest stressors — money and relationships — but many working in the field have little formal training on handling situations that threaten their own safety. Agents are often expected to meet clients one-on-one, often in empty homes, creating the perfect opportunity for predators. Rob Andress, a real estate agent who also runs Street Safe Self-Defence with his wife, Beth Andress, said when confronted with violence, Realtors often escalate the situation with their response. Both men and women can be victims, said Rob, but there are differences in the types of situations…
Once criticized for its slow start, the City of Toronto’s dedicated housing agency, CreateTO, has made major strides over the past two years. A new Housing Progress Update set to be presented at the agency’s next meeting on Monday highlights that three projects have begun construction since the summer of 2023, while six others have major development segment partners in place, including Ellis Don, Collecdev-Markee, Windmill Developments, Kilmer Group, Tricon Residential, KingSett Capital, and CentreCourt. Notably, this latest edition of CreateTO’s progress update makes mention of the City’s new ‘Toronto Builds’ framework, approved by Council at their May session, which…
More than just the name behind a revered Toronto brokerage, Harvey Kalles was a compass for the industry — a steady, thoughtful leader whose influence transcended the business he built. Kalles, founder of Harvey Kalles Real Estate Ltd., died on July 9 at age 98. In the industry for nearly three-quarters of a century, Kalles was still in tune with the real estate market even days before his passing. His son Michael Kalles, president of the family brokerage, said during the service on Thursday at Benjamin’s Park Memorial Chapel that his father was still sharp as a tack, and that…
In contrast to the intensely colourful Mount Dennis mural at Weston Road and Eglinton Avenue West, the abutting Scotiabank branch at 1150 Weston Road doesn’t make much of an impression. But, perhaps surprisingly, it’s a notable building that’s been around for 75 years and on the City of Toronto’s Heritage Register since 2013. Given its heritage significance, a 46-storey development proposal that went to the City at the beginning of July calls for the incorporation of the existing building at its base. The plans come from a numbered company (2629964 Ontario Inc.), and also calls for a height of around…
Canadian real estate prices have been resilient in recent years, but a fundamental indicator is flashing warning signs. Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) data shows the sales-to-new listings ratio (SNLR) fell in June, indicating the weakest demand balance for the month since 1995. The indicator hasn’t eroded from peak to trough this quickly since the late 80s, during the years directly preceding the 1990s real estate price crash, the largest in Canada’s history. Sales-To-New Listings Ratio The sales-to-new listings ratio (SNLR) is a simple but powerful metric the industry uses to gauge demand balance. It’s a leading indicator of market…

The Canadian housing market showed fresh signs of momentum in June, with home sales continuing their upward trend and prices stabilizing after several months of declines, according to the latest report from the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). While activity remains below historical highs, buyers are clearly stepping back in, especially in the Greater Toronto Area, where sales have been on a rebound since spring. Sales see second month of gains Home sales recorded over Canadian MLS® Systems climbed 2.8% in June compared to May. This follows a 3.5% increase the month before, marking two solid months of recovery. Sales…
Escalating trade tensions and economic pressures have slowed the trading of multi-million-dollar homes in Canada, but Montreal and Calgary are resilient in the face of these challenges, according to Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. Calgary’s residential sales over $1 million saw a modest 3 per cent uptick to 1,164 properties in the first half of 2025. Of those, 10 were in the $4 million-plus category, compared to seven in the same period of 2024, according to Sotheby’s State of Luxury report, released Wednesday. Montreal’s luxury housing market “defied national headwinds in the first half of 2025,” reads the report. Residential sales…
