This got us thinking: if Canadian cities were zodiac signs, which ones would they match? From fiery Scorpios to free-spirited Sagittarians, we’ve paired each of the 12 signs with a city that we think captures its spirit.
Aries: Mississauga
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, known for its competitive and pioneering spirit. The same can be said for Mississauga, a city eager to distinguish itself from neighboring Toronto. Branding itself as a thriving global hub, Mississauga carries the bold, ambitious vibe of an Aries.
At first glance, Mississauga might not seem adventurous enough to be an Aries, but it is home to Canada’s largest and busiest airport, Toronto Pearson, which connects 47 million passengers a year to destinations around the world.
Taurus: Vancouver
Taurus values the finer things in life, and there’s no better place in Canada for luxury than Vancouver. Ultra-luxurious coastal homes can sell for over $20 million, reflecting the city’s opulence.
At the same time, Vancouver embodies Taurus’s more low-key traits: calm, patient, and grounded. Surrounded by mountains, ocean, and lush greenery, the city encourages residents to slow down and embrace a nature-driven lifestyle. But this slower pace doesn’t mean it lacks ambition. Like Taurus, Vancouver is hardworking, with thriving industries in sustainability, tech, film, and tourism ensuring its place as both serene and successful.
Gemini: Ottawa
The sign most known for its duality, Gemini, finds its match in Ottawa. French and English flow throughout the city, reflecting its bilingual identity. But is it a small city with big ambitions or a big city with small-town charm? No one can quite decide. It’s historical and current, urban and rural, lively and quiet.
Like Gemini, Ottawa is highly intellectual, with 39% of the population having a bachelor’s degree or higher (for comparison, Vancouver, Calgary, and Halifax are all under 36%). And for Gemini’s nosy and curious side? As Canada’s political capital, Ottawa is naturally in everyone’s business.
Cancer: Halifax
Halifax’s entire identity is shaped by maritime culture, so a water sign like Cancer is the perfect pairing for it. (The symbol of Cancer is literally a crab!) Cancers are nurturing and community-oriented, much like the cozy pubs and warm seafood chowder of Halifax.
But they are also known for being moody and emotional. If you’ve ever spent a day in Nova Scotia, then you’ll know the weather can easily swing from a foggy, dark morning to a sunny, sparkling afternoon. Speaking of loving the spotlight, Toronto attracts a fair share of celebrities. It’s a well-known filming location for Hollywood and hosts the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) every September. It’s also home to major sporting events, concerts, conferences, and theatre performances. It’s a good thing the city has so much going on, too, because Leos hate being bored.
Virgo: Charlottetown
Loyal and attentive, Virgos are embodied by Charlottetown. The small capital city of Prince Edward Island is a close-knit, welcoming community that looks after both its residents and visitors. That classic Atlantic Canadian hospitality makes Charlottetown, much like Virgos, reliable and thoughtful.
Smaller is better for meticulous perfectionists like Virgo, who prefer life neat and orderly. Charlottetown reflects this in its carefully preserved historic buildings and its neatly planned waterfront. As a modest city, it also shares Virgo’s humble side, balancing small-town warmth with an appreciation for detail and tradition.
Libra: Victoria
Charming, elegant, and beautiful are all words used to describe a Libra. They can also describe one of Canada’s most picturesque cities: Victoria. Known as the “Garden City”, Victoria has plenty of aesthetic beauty to go around and is widely considered one of the greenest cities in the country.
Victoria is also the capital of British Columbia, giving it the diplomatic nature that Libras are known for. It’s also why Libra’s love balance, which Victoria has plenty of. With its temperate weather and unique mix of laid-back island living and urban energy, Victoria strikes a balance that just feels right.
Scorpio: Quebec City
If one word could describe a Scorpio, it’d be passionate. Quebec City, too, has a fiery aura about itself. It has an intense connection to its French-Canadian heritage and is equally proud and passionate about its foodie scene. Despite being a small city, it has 28 restaurants in the Michelin guide.
Scorpios are known for their loyalty, and Quebec City exemplifies this devotion by preserving over 400 years of history in its cobblestone streets and historic Old Town. Scorpios can come across as intimidating, much like Quebec City if you’re nervous about ordering a café in French. But beneath the surface, both reveal a spirit that’s honest, determined, and unforgettable.
Sagittarius: Calgary
Natural explorers like Sagittarius will have the most fun in Calgary, a city bursting with adventure. Whether it’s watching a wild rodeo at the Calgary Stampede or whitewater rafting the Kananaskis River, Sagittarians can easily get their fix of new experiences.
As a fire sign, Sagittarius is bold and blunt. But they’re also good-humored. Calgary is the same: it might challenge you with its wild spirit, but once you dive in, you’ll see it’s as welcoming and fun-loving as any Sagittarius.
Capricorn: Edmonton
Like a Capricorn, Edmonton is hard-working and likes building for the future. With more people than ever moving to Edmonton, the city is keeping pace with growth. The LRT is expanding, a new event park and village are being built at Ice District, and unlike most cities in the country, home construction is booming.
Goal-oriented Capricorns are ambitious leaders. Similarly, Edmonton is leading the ranks in several areas. Lonely Planet included Edmonton on its list of Best Cities to Travel in 2025; it ranked in the top five Best Places to Buy Real Estate in Canada in 2025 by MoneySense, and it has even been ranked the best place in Canada to survive a zombie apocalypse.
Aquarius: Montreal
Allure magazine describes Aquarius as the most innovative and rebellious sign, and we’d have to agree. Montreal makes for the perfect Aquarius in that it marches to the beat of its own drum. It doesn’t have a subway; it has a metro. Want to turn right on red? Don’t try. Montreal is the only major city in Canada that doesn’t allow it. The list of quirks goes on and on.
Montreal is unique and unusual, bringing together European and North American cultural identities. It’s also highly inventive. From the first search engine to IMAX and the snow blower, a lot of today’s most common innovations were created in Montreal. And let’s not forget Cirque du Soleil, which was founded in the city.
Pisces: St. John’s
The last sign in the zodiac is mysterious, dreamy, emotional Pisces. Our pick for this water sign is St. John’s, Newfoundland. So what makes St. John’s imaginative and whimsical? Its thriving music scene, rooted in the folk traditions of Ireland, England, and Scotland, fills local pubs with lively energy. The city’s colorful homes and breathtaking coastal landscapes also speak to Pisces’ romantic, dreamy nature.
But Pisces can be secretive, too. The fog rolling through St. John’s, along with its hidden coves and geographic isolation, lends the city an air of mystery that perfectly mirrors this enigmatic sign.
