As the weather cools and Autumn settles in, it’s finally the time for the leaves to show off their colours. And what better way to officially celebrate the season changing than embarking on a fall foliage road trip along the East Coast of Canada and the U.S.? We’ve rounded up the best East Coast fall trips to cities where you can catch the most breathtaking, fiery fall views.

    Québec City, Québec

Every autumn, Québec City bursts into colour as the leaves turn bright shades of red, orange, and gold. The best time to catch the fall leaves at their peak is from late September to early October, when the city’s historic streets and surrounding parks are covered in vibrant colour. Some popular spots to visit during the season include Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier, known for its hiking trails and photography spots, and Mont-Sainte-Anne, where visitors can enjoy scenic chairlift rides, as well as hiking and biking trails.

    Fredericton, New Brunswick

The best times to visit Fredericton for colorful fall foliage are during the second and third weeks of October. Nearby provincial parks, local trails, and the surrounding countryside burst with vibrant reds, oranges, and golds, perfect for a relaxing autumn stroll. A popular destination includes Odell Park, which spans 333 acres in the heart of the city. Home to trees over 400 years old and featuring 16 km of trails, the park offers plenty of opportunities to stroll, hike and fully enjoy the colourful autumn leaves.

    Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax offers some of the most breathtaking fall views in Nova Scotia, with peak colours from late September to the end of October. This is also when farmers’ markets and festivals are in full swing, giving you a chance to enjoy the fall foliage and participate in seasonal activities. Scenic spots like Point Pleasant Park offer ocean views and walking trails, while the Chebucto Peninsula & Bluff Trail offers short hikes and landscape views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

    Rangley and Bar Harbor, Maine

Maine is a must-visit during the autumn season, offering the perfect mix of forests, mountains, and scenic drives bursting with colour. The Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway is a popular route in the fall as it showcases stunning mountain landscapes, vibrant forests, and sparkling lakes along the way. If long drives aren’t your thing, you can visit Acadia National Park instead. This popular destination near Bar Harbor has incredible views of forests, mountains, and the ocean. Highlights within the park include Cadillac Mountain, which has one of the most scenic views in the park, as well as Jordan Pond, a pristine lake that also has an easy walking trail .

    White Mountains, New Hampshire

Every autumn, visitors all over the world travel to the White Mountains to admire the fiery foliage. Although the timing slightly differs each year, the peak colours usually appear from early to late October. Scenic drives, hiking trails, and charming mountain towns make the White Mountains an ideal destination to soak in the shining gold, orange, and red leaves of the season. Franconia Notch State Park is a prime spot within the White Mountains, offering charming views of reflective waters that make the autumn leaves look even more enchanting.

    Boston, Massachusetts

Boston offers several remarkable views of fall foliage in both urban and rural areas. Boston Common, established in 1634, is America’s oldest park. Each autumn, the park transforms into a living painting of autumn hues, with the city’s skyline as a striking backdrop. Home to over 700 trees across multiple species, Boston Common is truly picturesque during the season. Just a short drive from the city, towns like Lexington and Concord showcase the same stunning fall colours in a quieter, small-town setting.

Fall in Love with the East Coast

From Québec City to Boston, the East Coast comes alive with colour every autumn. Whether you love exploring vibrant cities, quaint towns, or just going for a scenic drive, these East Coast fall trips are perfect for experiencing the season’s stunning fall foliage.
